A man who stabbed his girlfriend in the leg has been jailed for two years.

Derek Rogers, 50, of Eynsham Drive, Abbey Wood, was sentenced to two years imprisonment for assault on Wednesday, March 15, following a three-day trial at Woolwich Crown Court.

The court heard how Rogers attacked the woman, aged in her 30s, following an argument at the home in Eynsham Drive on June 23, 2016.

During the argument Rogers took a knife and stabbed the woman once in her leg.

She managed to contact a friend who then called the police.

When officers arrived, Rogers tried to pass off what had happened as an accident, but he was arrested on suspicion of assault. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment and was later discharged.

Rogers was taken into custody, but refused to answer any questions about the stabbing during a police interview. He was then charged.

During the trial, Rogers tried to claim the woman had inflicted the injury to herself, but the jury found him guilty and he was subsequently convicted.

Detective Constable Gemma Jackson of Greenwich CID, who led the investigation, said: "Domestic abuse destroys lives and anyone can be affected by it. The victim has had to go through the ordeal of reliving the incident in court as Rogers refused to accept his guilt.

"She was extremely courageous and I am pleased the jury were able to see through Rogers lies and convict him. Hopefully the victim can now begin to move on with her life."
