A leisure centre in Northfleet will be shut until further notice following a "suspicious" fire in the early hours of this morning, March 10.

The fire was reported at a Cygnet Leisure centre in Old Perry Street at 12:44am.

Kent Fire and Rescue spokesperson said a admin room next to the gym had been completely destroyed and parts of the gym have been damaged by water and smoke.

Police say the fire is believed to be suspicious and officers are investigating the circumstances.

A Gravesham council statement said: "Gravesham Community Leisure Limited and Gravesham Borough Council are currently working with Kent Fire and Rescue Service and Kent Police to investigate the cause of the fire.

"Cygnet Leisure Centre will be closed until further notice and we will be working with GCLL to partially open the centre within the next week or so.

"We apologise for any inconvinience caused and it is hoped to get as many of the facilities open at Cygnet as soon as we can.

There was another fire in Northfleet yesterday afternoon but police do not believe the two to be linked.

The second fire was at a derelict scout hut in Nelson Road.

Three fire engines attended the scene at 17.40 to a single story building described as being "well alight".

A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue Services said they had alerted police in case it was deliberate.

Kent Police said the cause is not yet known.
