An Eltham mum of a ‘kind, caring and inspirational’ little girl who raised thousands before she died is fundraising in her daughter’s memory.

Sophie Powell, 11, fought cancer for two years before her death last month, and was passionate about raising money to help other sick children.

She told her parents that she wanted to dedicate her life to fundraising and had mapped out how she would help others.

Mrs Powell, 47, said: “She had her life mapped out, and she would be a famous actress and then she would go on lots of quiz shows and raise money for charity. Then she would be a teacher and all the kids would think she was really cool because she was famous.

“Then she would buy a place in the Isle of Wight for sick children. As her parents we feel she would have achieved her dreams.

“She never asked for anything herself. It was all about what she could do. In hospital it was about what she was going to buy her twin sister.

“We’re trying to help her raise as much money as possible.

“As her mum I’m really proud, she was so kind.”

Mrs Powell, alongside husband Steve and Sophie's twin sister Emma, is raising money for four charities that supported them while Sophie was fighting her illness.

So far they have raised more than £15,000 and the total will be split between Demelza Hospice Care for Children, CCT Tiger Ward at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Rays of Sunshine and CLIC Sargent.

Mrs Powell added: “She raised over £3,000 for charity when she was first diagnosed in 2015, aged just 9 years old, and she wanted to raise more.

“We are of course devastated and broken-hearted. She was so, so brave through all of her treatment yet never asked for anything for herself - she just wanted to help others.

“Her memorial service was attended by over 300 people which is simply testament to the number of lives Sophie touched and how kind, caring and inspirational she was.

“As a family the pain of her loss is unbearable, but in tribute and as a legacy for Sophie we have set up a fundraising page in her memory.

“We are supporting four charities which were close to Sophie's heart and have supported us as a family, as well as other children who battle cancer.”
