Plans to extend the Bakerloo line into Lewisham have been unveiled by Transport for London(TFL).

The line will extend past Elephant and Castle through Old Kent Road, New Cross Gate and into Lewisham.

This would mean an underground train will be available every two to three minutes from Lewisham to central London.

The station would be located on Thurston Road along the south western side of the existing National Rail station.

The completion date is set for 2028/29 and the plans say that this the best option for an “initial” extension, implying that there could be further expansions into Greenwich and Bromley.

TFL say the extension would provide capacity for 65,000 extra journeys at peak hours and help relieve congestion on bus and rail services.

It would also reduce CO2 emissions to help tackle London’s air pollution problem.

Public consultations were held in 2014 where early plans saw the line extending into Bromley.

However Bromley Council said the extension was “unacceptable” at the time, which was branded as a “narrow-minded nimby” decision by opposing councillors.

Croydon council wanted the Bakerloo line to be extended to Croydon but their proposals were rejected.

Exhibitions will be held at ground floor of the Richard Hoggart Building in New Cross on March 3 from 11am to 8pmand March 18 from 10am to 4pm.

Exhibitions will also be held at Lewisham Shopping Centreon February 23 from 11am to 7pm and April 8 from 10am to 4pm.

The public consultation will be open until April 21.
