Ikea have unveiled their plans to build a new store in Greenwich, bringing 500 jobs to the borough.

The new store, which will be the first new Ikea store in London for over ten years, will be located at the Millenium Way Retail Park in Charlton.

Ikea plan for the store to be their leading sustainable store, with solar panels and rainwater harvesting.

It will have 75 cycle spaces, 20 electric car-charging points, and served by six bus routes with 42 buses an hour.

The store will include a rooftop garden and pavilion with recreational spaces for workers, as well as a restaurant.

The Swedish furniture giant has promised to pay its workers a real living wage, which is currently at £9.75 in London.

The plans, which are set to be submitted to Greenwich planning at the end of February, could see opposition from locals who opposed the original plans in 2014.

Opponents took issue with the amount of extra traffic the new store could bring to Greenwich.

Richard Rands, Ikea UK deputy property manager, said: “This is an exciting development for IKEA that has the customer, the local community and the environment at its heart.

“We want to create a unique and exciting space that will act as a place to meet, learn, share and shop - enhancing the ways we engage with our customers, the local community and stakeholders.”

Joanna Yarrow, head of sustainability UK and Ireland for Ikea, said: “Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at IKEA – from the energy and resources we use and the way we work with communities to the way we can support our customers to save energy, water and waste at home and live more healthily.

“In Greenwich it’s fantastic to have the opportunity to put those principles into practice, working together with the local community and stakeholders to create a unique experience that shows how sustainability can be accessible, affordable and attractive for everyone.”
