Culinary creative residents at a Sanctuary Care home in Erith have been getting their five-a-day with fruity smoothie sessions.

There was an ap-peel-ing variety of exotic fruit on offer when the team and residents at Shaftesbury Court Residential Care Home in Selkirk Drive showed the fun and easy ways to get your five-a-day as part of a balanced lifestyle.

To start the day, residents took part in a fun armchair exercise class – which included light movements to help improve mobility, followed by a refreshing treat.

Peeling and slicing an abundance of melon, pineapple, kiwis, cherries and other colourful fruit and winter vegetables, residents and the team juiced fabulously fresh produce into delicious smoothie drinks.

The tangy get-together was set up to show the fun ways to stick to a healthy diet – activities leader Sara Bird explains.

Sara said: “We are very health conscious here so thought what better way to promote the fun and easy ways to live well – especially as many people will be trying to stick to New Year’s resolutions this time of year.

“Eating healthy often has a bad reputation for being boring and we wanted to change this, we wanted to show everyone that if we can do it so can you.”

101- year-old resident Lucy Savage said: “I really enjoyed the seated exercise, everyone took part and thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Fellow resident Audrey Stebbing, 85 added: “It was great to try some exotic fruit that I haven’t had before, it was all really delicious and also made lovely flavoured smoothies.”
