Fears have been mounting that a serial animal killer will “get bored of cats and eventually move onto humans”.

The “psychopathic serial killer”, who is thought to have killed over 180 cats in 14 months, was originally referred to as the ‘Croydon cat killer’ until their actions spread outside of Croydon.

Now dubbed the ‘UK cat killer’, dead cats in the last week in Beckenham and Sutton have been blamed on this feline slayer.

Tony Jenkins, of South Norwood Animal Rescue and Liberty (SNARL), says new dead cats have been found in Thornton Heath and Carshalton since Christmas.

The cats had been decapitated and another had their ears cut off, traits said to be typical of the killer.

Jenkins said: “There was a clear period of quite around Christmas but it has been more than one a week since then.

“We know they have to be the work of a person. Some of the cuts have been more surgical and some have been rough.

“We know some of the cats have been removed and replaced after the work has been done, and some have been cut off at the place they were found.

“They sometimes hang out in the person’s back garden, cutting bits off.

“Sometimes they just cut off the head, sometimes it’s the tail, and sometimes it’s the head, tail and front legs.

“What’s more frightening about this killer is that he hangs about and watches peoples’ reactions. He puts the cats on displays for the kicks.

“He puts the cat underneath the bedroom windows. You wake up in the morning, open your curtains and there is your cat with no head.”

The police have been working together with SNARL to catch the killer. The investigation, called Operation Takahe, is based out of Croydon and includes police from multiple London boroughs.

Despite how long the attacks have been happening, the killer hasn’t been tracked down because of how well organised they appear to be.

Jenkins said: “He is a psychopath serial killer but the only evidence we have is that he kills cats and some foxes.

“This person is very well organised and intelligent. He is staying away from CCTV cameras and he is wearing gloves and using tools.

“My biggest fear is what happens if they started finding killing cats boring.

“The police are working very close with us. Everybody has responded fantastically and helping us.

“While the police are talking it very seriously, at the end of the day it’s only cats. My fear is that they will get bored of cats and eventually move onto humans."
