A young family who had no working fire alarms had to be rescued from a flat in Greenwich after an extractor fan caught fire.
The family, living in a second floor flat in Point Close, had smelt smoke and found the communal attic was on fire before calling London Fire Brigade (LFB) at about 11.30pm last night.
Firefighters from Greenwich, Lewisham, Deptford and New Cross helped to rescue a man and a woman, along with two infants, to safety.
The family did not suffer any injuries.
The fire, thought to have been caused by an electrical fault in an extractor fan, damaged a small part of the loft and the second floor flat.
A LFB spokesman said: "There were no working smoke alarms in the property so firefighters fitted them for the family.
"Everyone should have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and the safest option is have those linked together.
"This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home."
The fire was under control by 1.17am.
