A Bromley mum was shocked when she got home to find housing association scrooges had ordered her to remove a festive decoration.

Lisa Jarvis arrived home to a sticker on her Christmas door decoration giving her until the 21st to take it down as it presents a fire hazard – when the building is not provided with fire extinguishers.

Signs also put on umbrellas and wellington boots in the Affinity Sutton property in Masons Hill were poorly received by residents.

Mrs Jarvis, 33, said: “I’d been out with my son and I came back and thought 'what has someone put on my Christmas decorations'.

"I have to say my blood was boiling, there is obviously no Christmas spirit. If it was inside my property it wouldn’t be a risk."

News Shopper:

The family have been battling with the association for almost a year due to a leak seeping damp into their 11-month-old son’s bedroom, and Mrs Jarvis said she is "furious" that Affinity Sutton has allegedly ignored those issues.

She said: “That is why it is so laughable, and why I’m completely furious, it’s such a jobsworth thing to do when there are actually issues.

“There’s a leak in the building that I first reported last year. It’s saturated the brick so much that damp had come through. I have complained to them so many times and nothing has been done.

“I have got an 11 month old son and a husband who is recovering from cancer, I’ve told them there are two vulnerable people living here.

“They don’t have time to fix the leak but they do have time to come round and stick stickers on stuff.

She added: “They have had 11 months to fix the leak and I have two weeks to take my decorations down.”

The note left on the door said: "In order to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors in case of fire, communal areas must remain free from obstruction and possible sources of fuel.

"To comply with our Fire Safety Policy please remove this item by 21/12/16."

An Affinity Sutton spokeswoman said: “We do operate a policy whereby communal areas are supposed to be kept completely clear of anything that could fuel a fire or cause an obstruction to exit.

“At Christmas we do extra checks on this to make sure people’s homes are as safe as they can be over the festive period given the increase in external decorations.”
