More homes have been eyed up for development in Thamesmead.

A 5,500sq m plot opposite the parade of shops in Battery Road has been granted planning permission by Greenwich Council.

The 66 home mixed-use development got the go-ahead as part of the Greater London Authority’s £47.5m investment for Thamesmead as part of its Housing Zone programme.

The Reach is part of Peabody’s wider-plans to develop around 1,000 new homes in Pettman Crescent and Griffin Manor Way as part of the GLA’s Plumstead and West Thamesmead Housing Zone.

This is expected to be submitted for planning permission in 2017.

For now the housing association has put forward its plans for The Reach in July this year as part of a £1bn investment in Thamesmead.

The site will include a mix of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom affordable homes set in four, five and six storey buildings.

The build will also include a communal garden and a commercial unit on the ground floor.

Works are expected to begin on site in the New Year and be completed by December 2018.

Peabody’s Executive Director for Thamesmead, John Lewis, said: “We are delighted that the council has approved our plans.

“The new homes will be close to the town centre, in the area that will particularly benefit from the DLR coming across the river, and will be the first of more than 3,000 new homes to rent and buy in London's new town.”

Councillor Denise Hyland, Leader of Greenwich Council, said: “Thamesmead is undergoing huge transformation and The Reach development is a major step forward in the delivery of the Mayor of London’s pledge to deliver more affordable housing for London through the new Housing Zones.

“Not only will the scheme bring much needed new housing for Londoners, but also investment and jobs that all help to make our local economy stronger.”

“I am very pleased that these properties will deliver shared ownership and affordable rented homes at social rents across the whole development."

The Plumstead and West Thamesmead Housing Zone is being led by the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the Abbey Wood and South Thamesmead Housing Zone is being led by the London Borough of Bexley.
