A mass flood in Crayford has left the area smelling like a “sewer”.

Several shops and restaurants were flooded due to complications in repairing the 24-inch pipe in Crayford Road which burst on Wednesday.

Residents woke up yesterday to find the High Street submerged in water.

And as repairs were carried out, Dan Shelton, 31, of Crayford Way, said the smell was “disgusting”.

He told News Shopper: “I had a phone call from my parents who were in France saying someone had messaged them on Facebook about the flood. I was in complete shock.

“My road wasn’t flooded but I didn’t have any water in my home for quite a while. The whole of Crayford smelled like a sewage – it was disgusting”

Mr Shelton, who captured pictures of the chaos with his drone, added that the flood badly affected his day.

He said: “I had train disruptions which had rail replacement services but because of Crayford the rail replacement did not go anywhere near the area.

“I ended up having to walk from Old Bexley to Crayford – it took me 45 minutes.”

Thames Water has apologised to Crayford residents who are still without water supply in their homes – bottled water is available in Townhall Square for those affected.
