An Eltham man has been bailed after four people were seriously injured when a car ploughed into a crowd in Rochester.

The 18-year-old was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and released until November 14 pending further enquiries.

Four men aged between 20 and 50 were taken to hospital with serious injuries after the crash shortly after 10pm on Friday (September 30) in the Medway City Estate.

They remain remain in critical but stable conditions, police have confirmed.

Seven more people needed hospital treatment and four others were hurt but were treated at the scene.

Police said none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The area is reported to be popular with boy racers using the estate for drag and drift racing, particularly on Friday evenings, causing complaints from residents.

Kent Police said officers were called to reports of a "disturbance involving nuisance vehicles" in Sir Thomas Longley Road.

They were already on the scene when the car hit pedestrians at 10.16pm.

Sergeant Scott Lynch said: 'We are conducting numerous enquiries into this incident and would like to speak to anyone with information who has not yet spoken to officers.

"A lot of people were in the area at the time and we believe that some of them may have video or pictures of the collision - I would like to encourage anyone with footage to get in contact with us as it could be vital for our investigation."

On Wednesday, Kent Police issued a weekly dispersal order on the area, to last for 48 hours on Friday evenings.

The aim is to give officers the power to break up groups of people caught driving in an antisocial manner, and arrest anyone who returns to the spot within the two-day period.
