A man who lied to police about his car being stolen after his friend crashed it in in Woolwich has been jailed for perverting the course of justice.

Kevin Veasey, 35, of Tappesfield Road, Nunhead, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment at Woolwich Crown Court today (September 30).

Veasey knew his friend friend Danny Doyle was driving the Vauxhall Zafira on April 29 last year when it crashed into another car on the opposite side of the road.

A 45-year-old man, the driver of the other car, was left paralysed from the chest down following the smash on Woolwich Church Street.

Police were called to the incident at around 1.10pm but Doyle had fled the scene after the collision and phoned Veasey minutes later.

When Veasey was interviewed by police, he told them his car had been stolen before the collision took place to cover his friend's back.

Veasey was convicted on Tuesday, September 1 at Woolwich Crown Court.
