A mum-of-two has dubbed a St Mary Cray hotel the “hotel from hell” after a stay where she and her family could not sleep on “filthy” beds or use the “mouldy” bathroom.

Kerry Tydeman, 25, drove down from Brackley, Northampton, with husband Mike, 32, and stepdaughter Libby, 12, as well as three-year-old Luca, for her stepdad’s surprise 50th birthday celebrations.

Mrs Tydeman says that when they arrived at their £70 room at the Mary Rose Inn on August 13 they were shocked at the dirt awaiting them.

She told News Shopper: “The bathroom was shocking – I wouldn’t let a flea-ridden dog bathe in it.

“There was mould like I have never seen before around the window and on the ceiling, cobwebs under the sink, on the skirting, around the toilet and near the shower.

“They should be ashamed to even let a member of staff go near the shower, let alone a member of the public.

“There’s dirt that has definitely been building up for a very, very long time, soap scum on the door that wouldn’t even shut.

“We pulled all beds away from the walls and slept on top of our previous day’s clothes.”

Mrs Tydeman and her family couldn’t bear to go near the bathroom facilities.

She said: “It was that grim that we drove another 25 minutes to my parents’ house in Catford so we could shower.

“They have no right to take a family’s hard-earned money and make them enter such disgusting conditions.”

Mrs Tydeman says she tried to complain through the LateRooms live chat function, but was told there wasn’t anything they could do.

When they checked out the next morning, she says she complained at reception and was told she would have to submit her complaint by email because the manager was away.

When News Shopper contacted the Mary Rose Inn, manager Imran Zaman said the hotel is undergoing a refurbishment.

After Mrs Tydeman was initially refused a refund, Mr Zaman told her the £70 would be refunded if she removed comments she had made about the hotel on social media.

When approached for clarification, Mr Zaman forwarded News Shopper the following response to Mrs Tydeman: “You have checked-in in the room at around mid-afternoon and it was helpful if you have complained on the reception that you weren’t satisfied with your room at that time.

“We had executive family rooms available where we could have replaced you or if you didn’t wanted to stay we refunded your money.

“But unfortunately we cannot refund the £70 at this stage of time where you have used the room for the night and didn’t complain afterwards when you were checked-in at the hotel."

A spokeswoman from LateRooms.com said: “We expect our hotel partners to provide the level of service and facilities advertised to customers and are now in contact with the hotel in question to help the customer in resolving their claim.

“In the meantime the Mary Rose Hotel has been removed from sale whilst the issue is investigated.”

Mrs Tydeman has reported the hotel to Bromley Trading Standards, who Bromley Council have confirmed are investigating her complaint.

The Mary Rose Inn has a 1.5 star rating on TripAdvisor, with 350 reviews of the hotel on the site.

One review from the last month advises potential guests to “avoid this place like the plague”, while another said it was “literally the worst hotel I have ever stayed in and I’ve stayed at a fair few hotels”.
