Tens of thousands of pounds has been spent on clearing trash from fly-tipping in Bexley.

In response to the £38,000 cleaning bill, a clamp down has begun including the use of dog poo fines.

The 12 month trial will be in place to beef up laws on littering, dog fouling and fly tipping.

An autumn start date has been set for the privately run scheme, where five uniformed officers will patrol the worst affected areas in Bexley.

The poo patrols, donned with body cameras, will be delivered by Kingdom Security Ltd, who run similar services for Dartford and Gravesham Council.

Offenders will be slapped an £80 fine for littering, £50 for dog fouling and a maximum of £400 for fly tipping.

Full payment of the fine will be required in all cases – with no reduction for early payment, the council has stated.

Young offenders will have their details recorded and a warning letter sent to their parents or school.

It is hoped that the cost of running the service will be met through the fines themselves.

Cabinet member Peter Craske said: "This pilot scheme aims to crack down on this anti-social behaviour, and hopefully save taxpayers' money too.

"I am sure Bexley residents will support this initiative.

"One of the reasons Bexley is one of the best places to live in the UK is because we take pride in having a clean and tidy community and no-one wants to see it ruined by a small minority."
