Saturday marks the annual Beckenham Oddity, a fundraising festival to restore the famous Bowie bandstand.

From 1pm to 7pm, Croydon Road Recreation Ground will be filled with live music, food, drink and market stalls, face painting and an auction – which includes a mystery item signed by the Starman himself.

Efforts to restore the Bowie bandstand, where the future Ziggy Stardust took to the stage at the Beckenham Arts Lab Growth Summer Festival in 1969, have redoubled since his death in January.

Friends of Croydon Road Recreation Ground hope the site will provide a place for future legends to cut their teeth for years to come.

And the fundraising doesn’t end with the festival – fans who can’t make it down on Saturday can still make their mark by buying a brick from around the bandstand for £100 and choosing their own personalised message to be engraved on it.

Cash donations towards the project are also welcomed.

Entry to the festival is £10 and children under 10 go free.
