A woman has been rescued from a flat fire in Erith.

The huge fire was raging at a new block of flats in James Watt Way near the high street with 72 firefighters on-hand to fight the flames.

Ten fire engines were being used to tackle the flames coming from a flat on the fifth floor.

Fire officers said solar panels on the roof of the apartment complex had probably played a role in spreading the blaze which happened on Monday (August 8).

The woman who was led out by the fire crew was said to be fine and had "gone off for tea with a friend", according to a London Fire Brigade spokesman.

He added that 25 other people inside the building had made their own way out and "everybody was accounted for".

The blaze ripped through a communal corridor and up through a roof void.

Smoke was seen gushing from the rafters as the fire raged on.

Manor Road was closed both ways between Avenue Road, Compton Place, James Watt Way and Crescent Road.

Bus diversions were in place on routes 428, 99, 229 and B12.

Nine crews from London and one from Kent were sent to tackle the fire, which was largely under control by 3.30pm.
