Irish travellers, who set up camp in Gravesend for seven days, have moved on.

Three vehicles entered Woodlands Park on Friday evening (August 5) and a number of tents were put up with more vehicles piling in.

A summons was served to the group on August 9 and a court order was pursued by the council.

Medway magistrates issued the order yesterday (August 11) which was served on the travellers this morning.

The travellers, which had a large number of children in the camp, explained that due to a medical situation involving a pregnant woman they pulled into camp and couldn’t leave on the Sunday when asked.

Police monitored the site and liaised with council officers and there were no reported incidents.

In Central Park, Dartford on Friday night (August 5) travellers were sighted but were swiftly moved on once they had arrived.

Chief executive of the council David Hughes said: “We understand the frustration of park users and residents but the council is obliged to act lawfully.

"Officers have acted as quickly as is possible and the action through the magistrates court has been expedited.”
