A Bromley Ukip councillor joked about 'killing EU remain voters' on his Facebook page last night.

Police in Bromley say they are making enquiries into the comments posted by Cray Valley West Councillor Terence Nathan.

The comment, posted as a response to an article about Brexit, reads: “Time to start killing these people till article 50 is invoked, perhaps remainers will get the message then.”

When someone replied to his comment saying “Really Terry, that’s not going to help”, Cllr Nathan’s replied: “Not threatening anyone, no need for threats just a bullet”.

Cllr Nathan today said he regretted his actions, and described the remark as a “ridiculous overstatement”.

Secretary of the Bromley Liberal Democrats, Julie Ireland, described Cllr Nathan’s comments as “shocking”.

She said: “Ukip has to condemn this immediately, it’s absolutely outrageous.”

Ms Ireland confirmed Cllr Nathan had been reported to the Bromley Council chief executive over the remarks.

Cllr Nathan told News Shopper his comment on Facebook was "intended with a pinch of salt”.

He said: “I did not think anyone would take it seriously but some have and I greatly regret this.

“It was honestly intended as a ridiculous overstatement."

He added: “Anyone would tell you that I hold dear both respect and democracy. I would never seriously have advocated such violence.

“I apologise for any offence taken as this was never intended.”

A spokesman for Ukip said Cllr Nathan was "obviously joking".

He said: "We don't see the need for a show trial.

"His joke was in very poor taste, but we have spoken to him and he is mortified.

"There seems no advantage to take it further."

Bromley MPS said on social media last night: “Police are aware of comments apparently posted online by a Bromley Councillor.

"Enquiries into this matter are ongoing."

A Bromley Council spokesman added: “The council has launched an investigation into the alleged comments made but it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.”
