A fox was rescued from an electrical duct on a Greenwich building site by workmen and RSPCA officers.

The animal got stuck head first in the tunnel in Elford Close on Monday (June 27).

RSPCA animal collection officer Rosie Leach said: “This fox was stuck head first in the tunnel of the electrical duct - which was about one to two metres deep. He wasn’t going anywhere without a bit of help.

“He had probably thought he could slip through the pipe, but once in there, he found it was too tight a space for him to be able to turn around and get himself out.

“The workmen on the site were fantastic - incredibly helpful - I don’t know what I could have done without them. Three or four of them shoveled shingle and rocks out of the way for me, and even cut through some of the piping, so I could reach and get hold of the fox.

“It was clear the fox had been scrambling and struggling to get out for some time - he was so caught up in the rope from the piping - so I had a bit of a job getting him untangled."

Workmen helped to free the fox.

The fox was unharmed and released straight back in to the wild.

Rosie Leach said: “Luckily it was clear that he was otherwise unharmed so I was able to release him back to the wild, and had the pleasure of seeing him run straight to his earth, where he belongs.”
