Animal lovers were horrified by the discovery of a group of seven “exotic” creatures, which had been crushed and left for dead in a Dartford Park.

The African Land Snails had cracked shells and were dumped near Central Park.

An RSPCA officer was called to the site this morning (May 27), but could do nothing to save the abandoned pets.

Now, the charity is calling on owners to remember that all animals, regardless of their species, feel pain.

A spokesman said: “This was an upsetting incident, as African land snails are fascinating creatures.

“These poor snails had cracked snails and were crushed. Sadly they were all dead when an RSPCA officer arrived at the scene this morning.

“Although invertebrates like these snails are not the subject of animal welfare law, the RSPCA promotes kindness to all animals and does not believe there are species that are incapable of suffering.

“Incidents involving exotic animals are increasing because they are so readily available, breed easily, and are cheap to buy.

“The RSPCA is experiencing widespread neglect of exotic animals, and we are urgently trying to change this.

“For many people, an exotic animal represents too much of a commitment – which is manifested in the growing number being abandoned, collected by the RSPCA and handed into shelters around the country.”

The picture of the snails were posted on the Dartford Gossip Facebook page, where an anonymous passer-by called on the “cowardly” owner to be “ashamed” of his or her actions.
