A Welling school was evacuated after a bomb scare reportedly interrupted pupils sitting exams.

Welling School in Elsa Road, moved pupils out of classrooms because of the crisis that is believed to have been triggered by a hoax call.

Some students are upset by the fact they were not allowed to finish their English test but the school has made it clear that they will not be "disadvantaged" by the exam board.

News Shopper:
Welling School has thanked its pupils for their exemplary manner

Speaking to News Shopper pupil Rebecca Evans, 16, said: “We thought it was a drill.

“Our papers were collected and we were evacuated to the courtyard.

“Everyone was saying different things.

“I think it’s appalling behaviour, we still had 30 minutes left.”

Another student, Sarah Golding, 15, is also unhappy with the way the exam was interrupted.

Miss Golding said: “We weren’t even allowed to finish it off, which is a joke.

“My mum thought it was really bad too.”

In response to the students and parents concerns, a spokesman from the school said: "A suspicious call was received by Welling School this morning.

"As a result, and as a precautionary measure, all students and staff were quickly, calmly and safely evacuated in line with school procedure.

"Police were made aware of the threat and attended Welling School immediately.

"The call has now been identified as a hoax and is under thorough investigation by the police.

"We would like to thank our students for behaving in an exemplary manner and following instructions."

There have been multiple evacuations across London and Kent this month due to bomb scares and the Met is concerned that this figure could rise.

A spokesman for the Met said: “There has been a series of calls over the past few weeks which has led to schools being evacuated.

“There has been a call made to the school, obviously it is up to them how they manage them.

“We’re aware of the bomb scare and we have to look at these things.

“However it would appear that this call falls into hoax calls and false alarms.”
