Explosions were heard across Northfleet last night (May 25), after a garage fire which was thought to involve up to 40 gas canisters.

Witnesses reported hearing “massive explosions” before the blaze broke out at around 11.15pm.

Meanwhile Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) sent two engines to Rembrant Drive, Northfleet, near the corner with Dene Holm Road.

They were on the scene for well over eight hours - leaving at gone 7.30am today (May 26).

Shocked residents took to social media to discuss what they heard.

On Gravesend News Facebook page, one person reported to have “heard if from Chalky Bank”, a 20 minute walk away, whilst another said the bang “made our conservatory shake in Riversdale”.

Another lady wrote: “I’m round the corner and it shook my windows! Scared the c*** outta (sic) me!”

Whilst one woman said: “I’m in the next street and it was well loud.

“At first I thought my partner fell out of bed until it happened again.

“Then went and seen the glow. The explosions just kept coming.”

A KFRS spokesman said: “Firefighters attacked the fire, which involved a number of cylinders, using one main jet, one hose reel and compressed air foam. A thermal imaging camera was also used.

“Crews have remained at the scene throughout the night once the fire was extinguished to allow the cylinders to vent, after being cooled.

“Firefighters left the scene shortly after 7.30am when duty of care was left with the local authority.

“It is not yet clear how the fire started.”
