A Beckenham woman said it’s a miracle her husband wasn’t killed when he was hit by debris after a car was ‘rammed off the road’ and smashed into a traffic light.

Jamie Slack, 43, was hit by debris from the traffic light when a silver car ploughed into it in Croydon Road, Beckenham.

He was coming out of the corner shop just before the traffic light crossing when he saw the car career towards him.

His wife Karen, 45, is urging the council to make the crossing safer, after she claims she witnessed another crash on the same crossing a few years ago.

She told News Shopper: “It’s the second accident that we have witnessed as a family on that exact spot.

“Speaking to others in the community there has been other accidents there.

“It was just a miracle he wasn’t killed to be honest.”

News Shopper:

Jack Slack was injured by flying debris in Croydon Road.

Although he wasn’t seriously injured, Mrs Slack said her husband was “in shock” when he returned home.

He went to the doctors the following day where he was diagnosed with injuries to his neck and back, she said.

Mrs Slack said her husband jumped back to try and avoid the car, but there was nowhere for him to go.

“That’s when it hit the traffic light luckily, otherwise it would have hit him,” she added.

“If you’re a pedestrian walking around that bit you have got no chance.”

Passer-by George Piner said a van “rammed” the silver car off the road towards nearby pedestrians.

The accident was reportedly caused by a fit of road rage when the vehicles were side by side on the approach to the lights and the van driver is believed to have fled the scene.

Mrs Slack, who has lived in nearby Eden Road for the past 16 years, said her husband “thought he was going to be a goner”.

Her husband’s lucky escape spurred her to speak out in a bid to improve road safety.

She said: “If it hadn’t have hit the traffic light it would have mowed him straight down at close range.

“It was a very close call and as I have witnessed something like that before I don’t want to just leave it.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen in my eye, an even more serious one basically.”

A spokesman for the Bromley Council said: “The council has got a good record of prioritising road accidents and tackling locations where there is a historic cluster which is higher than might be expected.

“Although we are not aware of this accident as yet, with only one previous recorded injury accident in the last 3 years, it falls within levels we would expect at any junction and well below levels we would expect to take action and target with remedial measures.

“We do not have a record of the residents actually contacting us but we would advise them accordingly if they do make contact.”
