Billy Davies is a contender for the vacant managerial job at Charlton, News Shopper understands.

Following Jose Riga’s resignation at the end of the season, the Addicks want to appoint a British manager in a bid to fire them back to the Championship.

And News Shopper has been told that Davies, 51, formerly of Derby and Nottingham Forest, is set to hold talks with the Charlton hierarchy this week.

The Scottish manager came close to landing the Addicks job after Alan Curbishley’s departure in 2006 - but the club opted for Iain Dowie.

Non-executive chairman Richard Murray is thought to be an admirer of the ex-Motherwell boss.

Davies masterminded Derby’s return to the Premier League nine years ago.

He is currently out of football management after being sacked by Forest in March 2014.

Charlton held talks with Chris Wilder about the possibility of taking over at the Valley earlier this month, however, he ended up at League One rivals Sheffield United.
