If you head over to Beckenham High Street today, be prepared to fight off any bees that might try to get in your bonnet.

A swarm of bees reportedly descended on Beckenham High Street yesterday afternoon (May 18) and were still around this morning.

Sebastian Borbeau, supervisor of the Starbucks on the street, said it all kicked off around 1.30pm.

He told News Shopper yesterday: "There was a wasp's nest or beehive on the apartment above us on the left and exterminators came but all they seem to have done is release a lot of bees.

"It may be someone's bees that escaped from their apartment."

He added that the area around the apartment was cordoned off but more or less carrying on as usual.

"We are a little bit impacted. There is a swarm of bees in front of our door.

"But people are doing what they do best - just standing around and watching."

The RSPCA discourages the removal of bee, wasp or hornet nests unless absolutely essential as bee, wasp and hornet nests usually die out naturally in winter.

They should be encouraged in gardens as they are excellent pollinators.

If the nest or swarm is a danger the RSPCA recommends the following:

Honeybees: Call the British Beekeepers' Assocation.

Bumblebees: They rarely swarm, attack or or sting people but if you're determined to remove them, call the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.

Wasps and hornets: Call the council pest control officer or an independent pest control company.
