Inspired by the devastating loss of a Sidcup man who was killed by a train in Dartford, his best friend and “soul mate” has raised hundreds of pounds for a mental health charity.

Leon Coulthard, who grew up in Albany Park and attended Cleeve Park School, died last Monday (May 2) – following a long battle with his “inner demons”.

The 31-year-old was due to attempt the Tough Mudder obstacle course with lifelong best mate James O’Connell later this month.

His heart-wrenching story has encouraged people to dig deep and Mr O’Connell has raised more than £1,300 for Mind in less than a week, in sponsorship for the race.

Paying tribute to Mr Coulthard, Mr O’Connell wrote: “He was the best friend I could have asked for and was always there for me like no one else. We shared the best and worst times imaginable.

“We were always in each other’s corner, a loyal soldier that man was. I loved Leon with all my heart. Leon had a massive heart, the biggest heart.

“And so much love to offer – even in his darkest times he was there offering a wise word to help me with my own minor problems, a credit to himself and all who cared for him.

“What I would do for a hug from Leon right now. Leon was the toughest person I know, a proper fighter and believe me he did not give up easily.

“He has been suffering for so long and obviously could not beat his inner demons. I am so PROUD of that boy and I pray that he is finally at peace in his mind, body and soul.

“I will remember Leon in the ring, Leon on the motorbike and Leon on the dancefloor. Leon the dreamer with huge ambition and crazy ideas. Leon with the massive personality and dodgy dance moves.

“I will miss our deep and meaningfuls and I will miss the support he has given me for the 30 years I have been on this earth.”

He added: “I am raising money to help people with similar problems to Leon who are still suffering every day in this world. I want to raise awareness about mental health.

“Sadly I couldn't save my best friend, but I will continue to offer help to those who are in need.”

The 12-mile obstacle course is taking place on May 21. Donate here.

Meanwhile, emotional tributes continue to be paid to Mr Coulthard.

Another friend said: “Dear Leon, from the first time I met you I connected with your soul. Such a beautiful being.

“We connected first time through misunderstanding our souls. How hard it must have been for you to decide life is better on the other side.

“God rest your soul Leon, and remember you were the most genuine soul I’ve ever known. Fly high my angel xx”.
