The world’s most powerful couple from Biggin Hill smashed their way through the first round of Britain’s Got Talent as they broke 1,000 tiles in under a minute.

Taekwondo teachers Lisa Pitman, 42, and her husband Chris, 46, were blown away to receive a yes from all four celebrity judges on Saturday, April 23.

World champion power breaker Lisa, who has been practicing Taekwondo for 27 years, inspired Chris to get involved in the martial art when they met five years ago.

The couple, who married in November 2014, teach classes five days a week to over 500 students at different locations across the Bromley borough with their business Virtue Taekwon-Do She told News Shopper: “He sort of fell in love with it as well, and I found out he’s amazing at smashing stuff too.

“Through Guinness World Records we’re the world’s most powerful couple.”

In 2013 Chris completed the challenge of smashing 1,000 tiles with his hands in 51 seconds, and Lisa achieved an impressive 83 seconds the following year, both securing the male and female world records.

Despite taking part in record attempts and demonstrations, it was the first time Lisa and Chris had taken their talent in front of an audience of that size, as well as a panel of celebrity judges.

“We were breaking roof tiles in the shape of a number 10 to celebrate the Britain’s Got Talent 10 year anniversary,” Lisa said.

“It was brilliant putting our world record breaking into entertainment.

“We don’t sing, we don’t dance – we smash stuff.”

Asked by Simon Cowell “What are the chances of you really hurting yourselves?”, Chris warned viewers “Please do not try this at home”.

Lisa described walking onto the prestigious Britain’s Got Talent stage as “terrifying”, but said the duo have had a huge amount of support from their students who have been inspired by their smashing performance.

“It was like an out of body experience,” Lisa said.

“We were just standing there at first, nothing would come out of my mouth. I wanted to pinch myself.”

Learning to smash tiles is all about technique, preparation and self-belief, Lisa explained.

She said it takes an incredible amount of energy to smash through so many tiles in a short amount of time - and it doesn’t always go to plan.

Smashing! Lisa and Chris Pitman.

On her third attempt at the Guinness World Record, filmed on BBC Breakfast, one of the broken tiles left Lisa with a nasty cut on her arm which bled heavily.

“I fainted at the end of it, to make it really dramatic,” she said.

And the first time they attempted the 1,000 tile challenge both Chris and Lisa ended up in hospital in Farnborough fearing they had broken their hands.

But fortunately they got away without any broken bones, only swelling, and their hands became stronger as they continued to train.

When Lisa and Chris got the confirmation they were going to appear on Britain’s Got Talent, they had only five days to perfect their act and make their way to Liverpool for filming – because the stage in London wasn’t strong enough to hold the 1,000 tiles.
