Women and children fled a flat fire in Thamesmead last night (May 2).
Some 21 firefighters, in four engines from Plumstead and East Greenwich stations, battled the blaze which broke out in Warrior Close at around 9.15pm.
The balcony of a fourth floor flat was badly damaged by the flames, but there was no heat or smoke damage inside the property.
The fire was noticed by a neighbour, who raised the alarm with the residents in a flat below.
The flat was fitted with a fire alarm, but this did not activate as the blaze was kept outside the property.
Two women and three children left the flat before London Fire Brigade (LFB) arrived.
The blaze was under control by 9.45pm, and the cause is currently being investigated.
