A residential road in St Mary Cray was closed after a sinkhole appeared.

Some bus routes were on diversion after the small hole emerged in the middle of Lower Road yesterday, near the junction with Albert Road, at around lunchtime.

Routes R2 R3 R6 477 were diverted via Cray Avenue and missing out stops on Lower Road.

Councillor Colin Smith, Executive Councillor for Environment said: “Whilst voids in the road are comparatively rare, they do happen from time to time, with running water often the cause and Thames Water making a repair.

"On this occasion, although the soil may have been washed away previously, there was no obvious sign of water still being present.

"Our team dug down approximately 5 feet to check and have now backfilled the hole, with the road now repaired and open to traffic again, all in the same day.”
