The Dartford Crossing is earning a whopping £3m per week in driver fines.

Commuters are failing to pay the Dart Charge at the Dartford Tunnel or QE2 Bridge because some are not aware of the new number plate cameras that have replaced the toll booths.

Fines are totalling to over £150m every year.

The toll booths were axed for the cameras in an attempt to improve traffic flow in November 2014.

There are no more toll booths at the Dartford Crossing

Under the new system drivers must pay £2.50 by midnight the day after their journey.

Failing to cough up the dough results in a £35 fine which must be paid within two weeks, £70 within four weeks - and if it still hasn’t been paid by then, it goes up to £107.

A Highways England spokesman said: “Without the charge, traffic volumes would increase and the economic benefits from the Crossing would reduce significantly.

“The charges imposed and collected are used to fund transport improvements in accordance with the Transport Act 2000, though not exclusively Dartford-related improvements.”

An LBC study revealed the staggering income that the Dartford Crossing receives.
