Famous names including comedian Jim Davidson, X Factor finalist Jade Ellis and celebrity hardmen Dave Courtney and Freddie Foreman will appear at a charity fundraiser at Charlton Football Club on St George’s Day.

The popular entertainers and personalities are coming together in the The Valley’s North Stand from 7.30pm on Saturday, April 23, for a banquet to raise money for the Royal Artillery Charitable Fund and HorseBack UK.

Organiser Brendan McGirr said: “We did a show last July at Charlton in the North Stand, which was a big success. On the back of it, we thought about doing another one. St Georges Day seemed appropriate. With Charlton playing at home that day, it had a lot of interest.”

Charlton fan and popular comedian Davidson was quick to get on board.

McGirr said: “Jim has been really, really helpful.

“As soon as he heard it was for the Artillery and the charity – he does loads of charity work – he just said ‘I’ll cancel whatever work I have got that day and I’ll jump on board and help you out with it’.

“I couldn’t have asked for more out of him.”

Davidson will host proceedings which include Quadrophenia actor John Blundell interviewing Dave Courtney, performances from comedian Ricky Lane and magician Andrew Hawkes and music from X Factor finalist Jade Ellis.

Plumstead resident Courtney has been outspoken in the past about his involvement in the criminal underworld and another attendee, Freddie Foreman, was an associate of the Kray twins.

But McGirr said the evening was not about celebrating a criminal lifestyle.

He said: “It will be entertaining. It’s not a serious evening. We’re not talking about criminals and gangsters, we’re talking about the black comedy element of living that life.

“We are not promoting crime, we are not promoting criminality, we are not saying it is good to be a criminal, we are actually showing you the funny side of it and probably the reasons why you shouldn’t do it because they all end up in a lot of trouble.”

Tickets cost £50 including a meal and tables of 10 cost £450. There will be an after party with DJs at Dave Courtney’s Camelot Castle in Plumstead. Call 07404 138316.
