The Women’s Equality Party is aiming to “reclaim the city” by mapping sexual harassment hotspots using digital pins.

On wemap.org, women can pinpoint sites where they became victims of sexual harassment, assault or verbal abuse as part of the newly launched #WEcount campaign.

Women’s Equality Party leader and London mayoral candidate Sophie Walker says: “Last year 4,000 rapes were reported in London.”

“We know that on average about 1 in 10 are reported, so the actual number of rapes is much higher.

“Thousands more women experience unwanted sexual behaviour every day, from groping to catcalling – and none of this is news.”

As part of the campaign, the Women’s Equality Party are asking women to post photos of their hands on social media, showing a postcode or place in the capital where they were attacked.

Alternatively, they can email their photos to WEcount@womensequality.emailnb.com to be posted anonymously.

Ms Walker continues: “London’s streets are not safe.

“WE will show this by live mapping the locations that women report having experienced catcalling, flashing, verbal abuse, harassment and physical assault.”

“WE will show that women all over London are affected by these events every day – and that every one of us counts.

“That is why we chose the hashtag #WEcount.”

She adds: “The prevalence of sexual assault and harassment in our capital shames London. I want us to take back every part of this great city to make it safe for women.”

Ms Walker’s campaign platform includes pledges to ring-fence funding for Rape Crisis Centres and London’s Haven, introduce unconscious bias training for police and the justice systems and introduce compulsory PSHE lessons on consent in schools.
