The NHS workers who beat Justin Bieber to last year's Christmas number one spot have been congratulated by the popstar in the flesh.

The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust choir triumphed over the Canadian born singer with their charity single A Bridge Over You.

Bieber, who is celebrating his 22nd birthday today, presented the choir with a trophy for their winning single which raced to the top spot after a wave of public support.

In the run up to the Christmas number one announcement Bieber tweeted his support for the NHS workers, despite the success of his own single Love Yourself which was also flying up the chart.

After meeting the choir in person, Bieber said: “I was honoured to meet everyone from the choir and I’m really happy that they got their number 1."

The single, which racked up 127,000 sales, was a mash-up of Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge over Troubled Water and Coldplay's Fix You.

Caroline Smith, Highly Specialist Physiotherapist for Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, said it was "amazing" to meet the popstar.

She said: "It all feels a bit surreal as we are NHS workers, not pop stars. But we are just so pleased to have been able to celebrate all the NHS heroes who go the extra mile every day.”
