Police closed off part of Catford after an unexploded Second World War bomb was discovered.

Officers were called just before 10am this morning (March 1) after the wartime relic was unearthed in Sandhurst Road.

Residents of the house phoned the police after they made the shocking discovery.

Officers confirmed the occupant stumbled across a bomb dating from the Second World War.

It has now been made safe, they added.

The Met Police advised people to steer clear of the area after the initial discovery.

A spokesman added specialist officers were called to the scene.

It is not clear if the bomb discovered today is connected to a German bombing raid in 1943, where the road was a confirmed hit.

On January 20 that year, a German Focke-Wulf 190 aircraft dropped a 500kg bomb on Sandhurst Road Primary School.

A total of 38 children and six teachers perished, with a further 60 wounded.

News Shopper spoke to residents who remembered that deadly night more than 70 years ago.
