A Bellingham family have finally laid a teenager to rest after she mysteriously died in the same hospital where she gave birth one month before.

Cheyenne Clements, from the Bellingham Estate in Southend Road, was just 18-years-old when she passed away on January 4 at Lewisham Hospital.

Exactly one month before on December 4, Cheyenne gave birth in the High Street hospital to a healthy baby boy, Oscar, weighing just under 8lbs.

But after visiting the doctors for cold-like symptoms, she was rushed to hospital via ambulance where she tragically died.

After a post-mortem was carried out at St Thomas’ Hospital, in central London, her body was finally released for a funeral.

The former Sedgehill School student was cremated at the Hither Green Crematorium, in Verdant Lane, yesterday (February 24).

Her funeral was held at the very same venue as her mother's, Maria, who died five years earlier, aged just 47.

MORE TOP STORIES Cheyenne’s aunt Marion Woods, 66, told News Shopper: “It’s a long time, nearly seven weeks, it’s a long time to wait.

"It’s good to lay her to rest.

“It’s been difficult, at least this allows us getting that certificate to go ahead with the funeral.

“She will be cremated there. Same place where her mum was cremated five years ago."

But the family are no closer to getting any answers, after the report into Cheyenne’s sudden death has given the cause as ‘yet to be established’.

Ms Woods, from Hood Avenue, Orpington, continued: “The post-mortem has been done but we are now waiting for the inquest.

"We’re hoping for an outcome.

“At least a reason, because at the moment we have got no reason. It still isn’t over until we know why.”

Yet Ms Woods added that they did not blame anyone for her death, but simply sought answers to try and prevent another tragedy occurring.

The receptionist said: “If when we find out the cause of death and it can be avoided for other people we want to get it out there.

“There’s been something in the news about sepsis, and if this is something of a similar vein then we want to get the message out there to avoid something else happening.

“If we know what exactly happened then it can help someone else, that’s the next step.

“Nobody is saying there’s any blame. It’s just about finding out what happened, not to apportion blame to anyone, and hopefully avoid it happening to someone else.

“We can’t see anything wrong that’s happened.

“She was perfectly alright until she got ill.

"It was just a cold and it came so quickly, but still we don’t know why.”

Baby Oscar, being looked after by Cheyenne’s father, Trevor Clements, 57, was said to be ‘thriving’.

Ms Woods added: “He’s just totally unaware, but he’s thriving, smiling, chatting. He’s lovely, doing all the normal things they do at that stage.”

A fundraising page set up in the wake of Cheyenne’s death managed to raise around £3,400, and after funeral costs the rest will go towards a nest egg for him, Ms Woods said.

She added tributes and donations from people were ‘very kind and very generous’.
