A 33-year-old man has been arrested after a double stabbing in Woolwich, which left two victims fighting for their lives in hospital.

Police were called to Sandy Hill Road at around 4pm on Tuesday, January 26, to reports of a man seen bleeding in the street.

Officers attended and he was rushed to a south London hospital, along with a second man, also injured, who police discovered in a nearby house.

Both men, aged 36 and 30, were treated for stab wounds and a Met Police spokesman initially described their conditions as "life-threatening".

Daniel Whiting, a Business IT University of Greenwich student, was walking towards his home just yards away from the stabbing, when he saw a man sat on the doorstep of the Ryatt Cash and Carry store surrounded by police officers.

The 20-year-old told News Shopper: “I could see a lot of blood. An ambulance arrived just as I reached my front door.

“Ten minutes later, more police cars arrived and the road was taped off.

“Woolwich is definitely not the safest of places but on the whole, where we are, it usually feels like one of the better parts. This is not good.”

Paramjit Ryatt, who works at the cash and carry, said he saw a bleeding man come rushing towards the shop before sitting down on the doorstep.

He told News Shopper: “He [the injured man] kept saying, ‘Police, police police.’

“I called an ambulance. I didn’t even get to look at his face. He was facing towards the road.

“He was bleeding. The police came within 10 minutes.

Police later said the men were no longer fighting for life.

The man, who was arrested on suspicion of GBH, has been bailed pending further enquiries to a date in late February.

Officers from Greenwich borough CID are investigating.
