A busy road junction in Penge will remain closed for several days due to emergency gas main repairs.

Engineers are carrying out emergency repairs to a gas main at the junction of Crystal Palace Park Road and Penge High Street with Thicket Road.

Work began at around 1am today (January 28) and is expected to continue until Saturday evening.

Traffic will be diverted via Westwood Hill, Sydenham Road, Newlands Park, Lennards Road, Parish Lane and Green Lane (in both directions).

Motorists are also advised to use a route via Westwood Hill, Crystal Palace Parade, Anerley Hill, Anerley Road and Croydon Road (in both directions).

Gas distribution firm SGN, which is responsible for the gas main, said local access to homes and businesses would be maintained.

An SGN spokesperson said: "We appreciate this is a key route in the area and will be working throughout the night and day to complete the repairs and reopen the road as quickly as possible.

"Please allow extra time for journeys or use alternative routes where possible.

"We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused."

Bus routes 176,197,227 and 354 are diverted.
