A fire broke out at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) in Farnborough.

Firefighters were called to the Farnborough Common hospital at 8.45am today (January 22) after a rubbish chute caught alight.

London Fire Brigade sent 15 firefighters and three fire engines from Orpington and Bromley to tackle the blaze.

The fire was in a large waste container in a loading bay and did not affect patients at the hospital.

A hospital staff member, who asked not to be named, told News Shopper: “The compressor where they compress all the cardboard and rubbish has caught alight.

“All the staff are waiting outside in the rain.

"They have had to evacuate part of the hospital.

“The smoke started blowing through the building. The fire got pretty big.”

A PRUH spokesperson said: "At 08.40 this morning, a fire was detected in a non-patient area at the PRUH.

"Firefighters attended the scene and extinguished the fire.

"Nobody was injured, and a full investigation is under way to establish the cause."

The fire was under control by around 11.05am.
