A nine-week-old kitten named Treacle is on the road to recovery following emergency surgery, after being found dumped near a roadside in Eltham.

The poorly feline, who was suffering from a large umbilical hernia, was found hiding underneath a car near the A20 on January 13.

RSPCA animal collection officer Rosie Leach, who picked Treacle up from a nearby vet clinic, believes she may have been dumped by owners who were avoiding paying for her medical costs.

She said: "The A20 is an extremely busy road so I can’t see how Treacle could have survived crossing it on her own which is why we suspect she was dumped.

"Sadly, this could be down to owners not wanting to pay the vet bills to treat her."

Surgeons at Putney Animal Hospital operated to remove the hernia.

Treacle was taken to Putney Animal Hospital with a life-threatening congenital umbilical hernia which had caused her intestines to push through her abdominal wall via a hole.

Veterinary nurse Maree Siebrecht said: "We had to do surgery straight away to repair the hernia and to stop any further complications.

"Treacle is now on her way to making a full recovery thanks to the wonderful work of the vets.

"She will be able to be adopted when she has recovered enough, she is a lovely young cat so I have no doubt she will be snapped up."
