The long anticipated cinema in Orpington is finally set to open its doors.

The seven screen Odeon, which was supposed to open in 2014, is due to welcome the public for the first time this year.

The 961 seat cinema, along the High Street, marks the first picture house in Orpington for more than 30 years.

One of only two in the UK, the complex will feature an ISENSE screen, which boasts high-definition screen able to accommodate 281 people.

Scheduled to open this Easter, the venture was delayed by businesses unwilling to rent the units around the cinema, which stands on the site of the former job centre.

Trevor Cavell, general manager at ODEON Orpington, said: “It’s fantastic to see the cinema finally taking shape in the Walnuts Shopping Centre.

“Anticipation for the opening is at an all-time high, and many people are already excited about upcoming blockbusters.”

Odeon, which have invested £4 million into the project, say the new development will create 46 new jobs.

Also planned for the site are restaurant Bella Italia, Puregym a B&M store and a hotel.

Peter Morgan, councillor for renewal and recreation said: “The new ODEON cinema will be a great addition to the town centre and not only will it directly create new jobs, but we’re also expecting to see visitor numbers grow as more people come, with benefits to the whole of local economy.”
