A woman, in her 40s, has been killed after being hit by a bus in Greenwich.

Emergency services were called to John Harrison Way, at its junction with West Parkside, to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a bus just after 7am this morning (January 4).

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) sent multiple resources to the scene, including London’s Air Ambulance.

Sadly the woman was pronounced dead at the scene by the air ambulance’s doctor.

Next of kin have been informed, although formal identification is yet to take place.

Holly Ware, whose home overlooks where the crash happened, told News Shopper: "I have just seen the private ambulance drive away and the police are starting to pack things up.

"The 472 has been moved by police officers and I think they are trying to recreate what they think happened as the bus was reversed to the bus stop then the bus accelerated and broke where the accident happened."

News Shopper:

Gary Dolan, whose flat also overlooks the junction, added: "That crossing has always been a bit dangerous, especially for people unfamiliar with the road layout.

"It looks like a dual carriageway but it’s two two-way roads, one for buses and one for cars.

"If you didn’t know it’d be quite easy to assume it’s a dual carriageway and only look to the left when crossing the bus section and step out in front of a bus coming from the right.

"I didn’t see the accident, only the unfortunate after effects. I saw the impact at the front left of the bus."

Road closures are in place while emergency services deal with the accident.

Matthew Pennycook, MP for Greenwich and Woolwich, also expressed his condolences.

He posted: "My thoughts this afternoon are with the family of the victim of the fatal accident that took place on John Harrison Way earlier today.

"I intend to write to the council and Transport for London (TfL) to ask that they both look again at whether this stretch of road, where accidents and near misses have occurred in the past, requires additional safety measures."

Any witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Catford Traffic Garage on 020 8285 1574.
