Police arrested an alleged speeding driver near Foots Cray after he refused to leave his car with a child passenger trapped inside.

Police closed a road on the A20 between the B2173 and Cray Road near Crittal’s Corner to deal with the distressed man.

Traffic had queued up to the Swanley Interchange as Kent Police assisted the Met. 

A Met spokesman said: "At approximately 12.20pm today (December 15), officers stopped a car on the London-bound slip road of the A20 at Critalls Corner, Foots Cray after it was seen driving at speed.

"A male and a female child were in the car.

"The male refused to get out of the car and both parties remain inside the vehicle.

"Officers attended the scene and spoke to the man.

"At approximately 2.55pm the man came out of the car and was arrested on suspicion of obstructing police, driving at excess speed and failing to provide a sample.

"He is en route to a south London police station.

"The child is safe and well."

All roads have since reopened.
