A young woman who died on Tuesday (December 8) after a night-time boating trip down the River Thames was originally from Welling.

24-year-old Charlotte Sophie Brown, who preferred to be known as Charli, was living in East Finchley at the time of her death, and was originally from the Bexley borough.

Charli died after she and a 29-year-old male friend were rescued from the Thames at Plantation Wharf, Wandsworth Bridge.

At around 11.45pm on Tuesday, Met Police officers responded to reports of shouting coming from the river - along with the Marine Support Unit, the National Police Air Service, the Coastguard, London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service.

London’s Chiswick RNLI lifeboat crew launched at 11.52pm - and arrived a few minutes later to find a man soaking wet on the shore.

The crew took him on board, and he said he had been in a small boat with a woman who was still missing.

The lifeboat crew immediately started a search up river following the incoming tide.

The police helicopter joined in the search and found a heat source in the river by Wandsworth Bridge, where a woman was spotted in the water by the lifeboat crew.

They brought her onboard and started CPR while travelling upstream to Putney Pier. There she was handed into the care of London Ambulance Service.

The pair were both rushed to hospital. A boat was later recovered from the water at the scene, and Charli died in hospital.

Charli's cause of death could not be established during a post-mortem examination at St George's Hospital mortuary on Friday (December 11), and the coroner ordered further tests.
