A fire that ripped through a two-storey home in Hedge Place Road, Greenhithe, has killed one cat trapped inside and destroyed almost a third of the ground floor.

The RSPCA and the police provided support to the fire crew.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 9.21pm.

“The fire was located on the ground floor.

“Firefighters used breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet and a main reel jet.

"Two cats were suffering from smoke inhalation."

The cause of yesterday’s blaze (November 23) is unknown.

It has been reported that the owners of the house were away at the time of the blaze that was out by 10.35pm.

A spokeswoman for the RSPCA said: "Sadly one of the cats wasn’t able to be resuscitated and passed away.

"Crews were able to save the second cat which was handed to the RSPCA."
