Dartford's flagship pool and leisure centre will re-open in February - after nearly 11 months shut.

Fairfield, in Lowfield Street, has been closed for a £12million refurbishment, which is nearly finished.

The new facility will have a four-court sports hall, 25 metre swimming pool, sauna, a new café, state-of-the-art gym, free parking, exercise and cycling studios.

It comes at a time of real change for the area - with Dartford finally seeing the back of Tesco's and their hoardings, after the company announced it was selling its Lowfield Street site in October.

The leisure will be managed for at least ten years by Places for People Leisure - a social enterprise company which manages over 115 local authority facilities in the UK.

It will be managed at no cost to taxpayers, and council leader Jeremy Kite said he was delighted with the appointment.

How the centre looked before

He said: "The search for new partners to run Fairfield was never just about the numbers.

"We wanted people who understood the role that this great new facility would play in the lives of local people.

"Users want a clean, well-run facility with good staff and sensible pricing that encourages more and more people to get fit, relax and have fun with their family and friends.

"There were a number of very high quality bids but we chose Places for People because they really understood our ambitions.

"The council’s deal means the operators will be funded from Fairfield’s income, not public subsidy.

"We want to encourage families to visit again and again without worrying about the affordability and I think users will be pleasantly surprised with the deals on offer."

Places for People Leisure’s business development director Tim Hewett said: "We are delighted and proud to have been chosen to operate the council’s prestigious new leisure facility in the heart of Dartford.

"Our mission is to 'create active places and healthy people'.
