A LECTURER has created chemical explosions to get girls interested in science.
Dr Graeme Hogarth visited Blackheath High School, Vanburgh Park, Blackheath, to lecture 11-to 18-year-old pupils about Life, The Universe and Everything - Where It All Comes From?
He spoke about the evolution of the chemical elements at the heart of the Big Bang theory of the universe's origins.
Dr Hogarth, who is a senior lecturer in chemistry at University College London, Gower Street, west London, then used nitrogen to make a fried egg explode. He also set a digestive biscuit on fire.
The lecture is just one of the ways the girls' school encourages its students to have an interest in science.
Chemistry teacher Dr Mary Harman said: "Visits by experts such as Dr Hogarth help girls see science as an exciting subject and a relevant career choice for young women."
