Concerned parents claim to be considering removing their children from a Bexleyheath primary school, after a six-year-old reportedly brought a knife to class.

The boy allegedly showed the silver and gold blade to several of his young classmates at Gravel Hill school in Watling Street on Thursday, October 22.

The school dealt with the matter before the half term holiday (October 26 - 30), but allegedly did not immediately notify all year two parents - who now say the situation was "brushed under the carpet".

One mum, whose daughter is in the same form as the boy, told News Shopper: "This is very concerning.

"My daughter was scared to tell me, as she knew it was wrong.

"She is scared in case he brings something in again and has asked me why he's still allowed in school.

"I am worried about her safety, and have considered removing her from the school.

"It has not been handled correctly. The school did not notify us of what happened - there was no reassurance of our children's safety.

"The school are not taking it seriously, they are brushing it under the carpet."

Another mum, whose son is in another year two class at the school, added: "It was left for the children to tell their parents.

"We are not happy about it - there is a child at the school with a knife.

"They spend more of their time there than they do at home. I want them to feel safe."

Another pupil's dad, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "It is appalling that my six-year-old is faced with issues such as these.

"This is a primary school and these children are too young.

"I am currently looking for a new school for my child."

A Gravel Hill spokesman said: "There was an incident at the school the week before half term.

"The matter was quickly dealt with and the parents directly involved were contacted and spoken to.

"The safety and wellbeing of our children is always our priority.

"At no time were pupils in any danger and it would be an extreme exaggeration to claim that they were."

The school confirmed parents and carers have been invited in to discuss concerns.
