A football-loving Farningham teenager could soon be playing for her country - after she was selected for the England squad.

Ellie Perkins, 15, was one of just 30 girls to be chosen, and spent her half term holiday away from Wilmington Grammar School for Girls training with the national ladies youth team.

The delighted Dartford Road resident gained her place on Wednesday, October 14, hearing the "fantastic" news from her dad Chris Perkins when she returned home from school.

She told News Shopper: "My dad was really proud - although he's more of a rugby person."

The centre back said she is excited to be achieving her sporting goals, and hopes to play professionally one day.

Ellie started her career at Charlton ladies when she was nine, after playing for a local boys' team for several years.

She is now in her second season with Arsenal ladies - and was one of five female Gunners to make the England under 16s squad.

She added: "We are supportive of each other, but you always keep it in the back of your mind that you are looking to get their position, and they are looking to get yours - so it's competition.

"It was a really great experience.

"You are always nervous, because it's training with the best girls in the country.

"But it's exciting and a proud moment."

Ellie claims it is still harder for girls to break into the sport, especially as more females consider a career in professional football.

The year 11 pupil, who is currently studying for her GCSEs, said: "There is no comparison. The boys get more [chances to compete]."

A school spokesman added: "We are very proud of Ellie and we will be avid fans of her."
