A lorry has struck a railway bridge in Shortlands.

Emergency services were called at around 10.15am after the 7.5 ton lorry crashed into the bridge in Beckenham Lane at the junction with Ravensbourne Avenue.

Pictures have emerged showing the vehicle wedged beneath the railway bridge surrounded by a police cordon.

Passersby tweeted about the bridge bash.

Mark Coyle wrote: “You had one job. Drive under the bridge. An amazing sight at Shortlands railway station in south east London.”

Alongside a picture of the jammed lorry, Elaine Storey tweeted: “Well that’s something you don’t see every day.”

Another Twitter user Helen Freeman said: “#Shortlands. Don’t go near as bridge has been struck by lorry. Westmoreland Road and Queen Anne Avenue are jammed with traffic.”

Parisa Wright said: “So the #bridge just by #Shortlands Station is blocked at the moment (no-one hurt, just the driver’s pride) #oops.”

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said the vehicle was in a precarious position but no-one was trapped.

Two fire engines from Bromley and Beckenham and a fire rescue unit from Wimbledon attended the incident. 

Firefighters made the area safe and managed to free the vehicle.

A Met Police spokesman said no-one was seriously injured and no arrests have been made.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area as arrangements were made to move the lorry.
